自然光の差し込む静閑な画面のなかに佇む少女たちのポートレートで知られる山元は、それらの写真表現において、被写体個人が日頃纏っている仮面の下に覆い隠された器としての人間の普遍的な姿へと関心を寄せています。2009年のエストニアでの制作以降、言語による意思疎通が難しい異国の地を訪れては、被写体や衣装、撮影場所を現地で見繕い、言葉を交えず身体的感覚によるコミュニケーションを通じて制作を行うという独自のプロセスを取り入れてきました。一定のトーンを放つ山元の作品からは想像し難いほどに多層的に練り込まれたその写真行為は、積み重ね行われることにより、少女たちがみせる無意識の断片の集積として結実しています。

本書は、2018年に発表した前作のタイトルに「Flowers（花）」という単語を付足しており、これまでの制作における作品概念の存続の意を表しています。
山元は東欧諸国を撮影してきましたが、それと平行してアフリカ・マラウイでの撮影や日本では北海道や沖縄で撮影も進めてきました。訪れた土地やそこに住まう人々が内包する文化、習慣、信仰などの蓄積された帰属意識が包括的に受け入れられ制作に落とし込まれています。これまでの制作の延長線上として、より親密な視点へと膨らみをみせる本作からは、自然のやわらかな光と現前する被写体の無意識な姿とが交差するその瞬間に魅せられた作家の静かな興奮が伝わります。
