希少❗️【AMERICAN SURFACES】Stephen Shore

8歳で写真を撮り始め、14歳でニューヨーク近代美術館(MoMA)に作品が購入され、アンディ・ウォーホル(Andy Warhol)のファクトリーを撮影、1971年には若干23歳にしてメトロポリタン美術館で個展を開催するという快挙を成し遂げた、スティーヴン・ショア。

この写真集はその個展後に取り組んだアート写真をカラーで撮るショアの新たな試みが示されている。
彼は1972年から1973年にかけてローライ35を携え、レンタカーを借り、ひたすらアメリカ西部を走り、帰りはルート66でアリゾナ、ニューメキシコ、テキサス、カンザス、ミズーリ、終点のイリノイ州シカゴまで戻った。アメリカ各地の日常的風物、人物がぎっしり詰まっているが、象徴的な瞬間は特になく、スナップショットでありながら、母国を見つめるクールな視線が感じられるのがショアらしい。
日付順に編纂されており、最終頁の1973年12月には同時期にカラー写真の世界で注目されていたウィリアム・エグルストン(William Eggleston)が、ショアの向けるカメラに視線を向けている。コダックの紙袋に包まれているブックデザインも、おそらく旅先での経験が表現されているようで大変ユニーク。
